Coating

A coating is a covering that is applied to the surface of an object, usually referred to as the substrate. Protective coatings are the most widely used products for corrosion control. They are used to provide long-term protection under a broad range of corrosive conditions, such as atmospheric environment. The purpose of applying the coating may be decorative, functional, or both. There are several types of coating such as metallic, inorganic, and organic coatings.

Metallic coatings

Metallic coatings provide a layer that changes the surface properties of the workpiece to those of the metal being applied. The deposition of metal coatings, such as Cr, Ni, Cu, and Cd, are usually achieved by wet chemical processes. Metallic coatings are deposited by electroplating, electroless plating, spraying, hot dipping, chemical vapour deposition, and ion vapour deposition. Cd, Cr, Ni, Al, Cu and Zn are used electrical equipment for the coating process.

Inorganic coatings

Inorganic coatings are produced by chemical action, with or without electrical assistance. The treatments are produced the immediate surface layer of metal into a film of metallic oxide or compound which has better corrosion resistance than the natural oxide film and provides an effective base or key for supplementary protection. There are several process such as Anodizing, Chromate filming, Nitriding, Phosphatizing.

Organic coatings

Organic coatings Paints, coatings, and high-performance organic coatings are used to protect equipment from environmental damage. The composition of component is an organic binder, which provides a solid coating of good adhesion such as latex paints, plastics, asphaltic materials, rubbers, and elastomers.
